Meeting Set for April 9th on New Building for Library in DeWitt
Plans are underway for the development of a new public library in DeWitt, which will be located on the town square at the site of the former DeWitt Era Enterprise printing building. According to Library Director Sarah Cole and Assistant Director Katie Moyer, the current library facility has reached capacity, prompting the need for expansion. The new location will offer a more central and accessible space, allowing patrons to incorporate library visits into their daily routines while enjoying nearby amenities.
Director Sarah Beth Cole provided a historical overview of the building and its significance to the community. The site dates back to 1913, when Maggie Goodwin operated a grocery store on the first floor while residing on the second. The current structure was constructed in the early 1950s to house a farm cooperative. In 1954, it became Harold Young’s Department Store, a prominent retail establishment that played a significant role in DeWitt’s commercial life during the 1950s and 1960s. The store offered a wide range of merchandise, including clothing, furniture, appliances, and toys, and also featured a service station and meat market. Many residents fondly recall the mechanical pony ride that was a popular attraction within the store.
In 1981, the DeWitt Era Enterprise relocated to the building following the closure of Young’s Department Store. The DeWitt New Era, originally founded in 1882 by Charles Spiller, later merged with the DeWitt Enterprise, established in 1916. In 1929, the two publications combined to form the DeWitt Era Enterprise, which has maintained a longstanding tradition of continuous publication. Today, it operates as the Era Enterprise, serving readers throughout Arkansas County.
The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and project architects intend to preserve as much of its historical character as possible throughout the renovation process.
Community involvement will play a key role in shaping the new library. A public meeting is scheduled for April 9 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the former DeWitt Era Enterprise building. Residents are encouraged to attend, share ideas, and provide input on desired features and services. Architects will present conceptual renderings of the proposed renovations, and attendees will have the opportunity to offer feedback. Individuals who possess historical photographs of the building are invited to bring them for scanning and archival purposes.
The development of the new library will occur in phases, reflecting the vision of creating a multifunctional community space. Plans include expanded programming for both children and adults, educational workshops, and accommodations for local homeschool groups. Library leadership also aims to host special events and incorporate community-driven initiatives to ensure the facility meets the evolving needs of DeWitt residents.
The new library is envisioned not only as a place for reading, but as a central hub for learning, engagement, and community connection.
