Gladys Adams Theis Carr

Gladys Adams Theis Carr, 88, of DeWitt, Ark., passed away on October 19, 2023. She was born to Norval and Belle Adams in Point Deluce, Ark., on November 24, 1934. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Wilmer Theis, her husband, Buster Carr, and her brothers Otis Adams, Jimmy Adams, and Tommy Adams.

She is survived by her sons, John Theis (Suzanne) of Sherwood, Ark. and Roger Theis (Marcia) of DeWitt, Ark., her grandchildren, Adam Theis (Donna) of DeWitt, Ark., Lauren Sullivan (Dustin) of Jonesboro, Ark., and Hannah Lee (Tyler) of San Jose, CA and her great grandchildren, Andrew Theis (Augustine), Kyleigh Sullivan, Amelia Sullivan, Samuel Lee, and Alice Lee. She is also survived by her sisters, Delma Latimer of Benton, Ark., Betty Cotner (Sammy) of DeWitt, Ark., and Neva McKewen of Benton, Ark. as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Gladys enjoyed a long career as a legal secretary prior to being elected to serve as the Arkansas County Treasurer. She served the citizens of Arkansas County in that capacity for 30 years until she retired in 2006. Following her retirement, she continued to perform bookkeeping and tax preparation services for several individuals and business entities as well as for the DeWitt Public Library. She retired from these services in July 2020.

Gladys was a member of Unity Missionary Baptist Church from its inception until her death. She faithfully served the church in various capacities, but will primarily be remembered for over 60 years of service as the church pianist and organist. She and her brother, Otis, provided music for countless funerals and revival services in the Arkansas County area.

A celebration of Gladys’ life was held October 24 at Unity Missionary Baptist Church with burial in Cedarcrest Memorial Gardens.
