DeWitt High School Junior, Katie Abel Designs Website for South Arkansas Community Health Needs

by Kaley Jo Baker

Katie Abel, a junior at DeWitt High School was presented with an opportunity most would dream of having. Her EAST lab teacher, Ashley Smith presented her with a challenge; to create a community health website for South Arkansas County. Though she had no experience building a website, she took it upon herself to look up various YouTube and Google tutorials on exactly what to do.

During her sophomore year, Abel spent roughly four months building it. “Even though this website gave me plenty of community service hours, I don’t like to think of it as just a volunteer project, but more of an opportunity. Not a lot of kids are presented with an opportunity like this one, but I was, and I am so thankful for that,” she explained.

Brian Miller, CEO of DeWitt Hospital had nothing but good things to say about the way Abel designed and set up the website. “She is great at what she does and we wanted to give her some sort of recognition for a job well done,” said Miller.

Danielle Westfall will be maintaining the website, along with a few other employees at DeWitt Hospital. They hope that this website is a resource for all things health-related in South Arkansas County. From a calendar of events to health insurance information to facts and trivia, www.southarcocommunityhealth.com is the place to go! For more information, or for updates you think would be helpful to the community, please contact DeWitt Hospital at (870) 946-3571.
