Field of Heroes on Display Through the Month of May

by Charlotte Purdy

Beginning May 1, as you drive down Park Avenue in Stuttgart, you will be greeted with a Field of Heroes in front of Daniel Harder American Legion Post 48. The lawn in front of Post 48 will be filled with flags in honor of and in memory of Veterans, firefighters, police officers, and wildlife officers.

Lillie Gray stated, “We missed two years due to COVID, but we are ready to display the flags and remind everyone to stop for a moment to pay their respects.” Gray, a member of Unit #48, knows how important it is to pay tribute to loved ones who have served our country.

“We started the Field of Heroes in November 2012, in honor of Veterans Day. Then we moved it to May for Memorial Day,” Gray said.

Flags are $35 each and can be purchased “In Honor of” or “In Memory of” for their loved ones. With each flag is a card that provides information on the hero, including when they served and what branch they served in. Each flag comes with one card and an additional card can be purchased for $4, with each flag pole capable of displaying two cards.

The Field of Heroes will be on display from May 1 to May 31. The flags are then taken down starting June 1 and can be picked up from June 6-10 at Post 48.

If you’d like to make a purchase or simply a donation, contact Lillie Gray at ljgray44@yahoo.com or stop by Southern Bancorp in Stuttgart and ask for Claudia Ahrens.
