Why Numbers Fluctuate on COVID-19 Cases

by Charlotte Purdy

Why do the numbers continue to fluctuate on cases?

We contacted the Arkansas Department of Health today to ask just that.

Reporter, Charlotte Purdy, asked "We have noticed the numbers go up, then down, and then slightly back up again. Could you explain how this occurs and what prompts the changes so we can educate our readers?"

Meg Mirivel from ADH responded by stating "When we receive a report of a case, we attribute it to a county as best we can. As we investigate the case, we may learn more information that leads us to attribute the case to another county. The map shows cases by county of residence."

Mirivel also stated "We are not releasing city-level information at this time due to our HIPAA guidelines. We know the virus is in our communities. Everyone should be taking steps to protect themselves and their communities by washing their hands, social distancing, and staying home as much as possible."
